Jennings to lead Lions in Sri Lanka

Keaton Jennings will captain the England Lions side on the tour of Sri Lanka in the New Year.

The Durham opener, who scored a memorable debut Test hundred against India last week, will skipper in both the four-day and one-day series next February and March.

With no more winter Test matches scheduled after this week’s fifth encounter with India, Jennings drops back to the squad he led in Dubai earlier this month.

The 24-year-old also scored a ton on his Lions debut and captained them to two successive victories against the UAE before joining the full England squad ahead of the fourth Test in Mumbai.

The tour is set to encompass two four-day and five one-day matches against the Sri Lanka ‘A’ side, who played Durham at Emirates Riverside during their tour of England in the summer.

National selector, James Whitaker, said: “Keaton Jennings impressed everyone on the Lions programme with his leadership skills as well as his batting.

“The Sri Lanka tour offers him the chance to gain further captaincy experience as well as playing some high-quality cricket in different and challenging conditions.

“The Lions play such an important role in bridging the gap between county and international cricket, and after a successful camp in the UAE culminating in an excellent win against Afghanistan, this tour of Sri Lanka is a great opportunity for players to gain experience of playing on the sub-continent.”

Lancashire opener Haseeb Hameed joins Jennings on the four-day part of the tour on his return from a finger injury, while Ben Duckett is involved for the one-day series.

Full fixture details will be confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket in due course.
