Jets prevail by D/L against the Vikings

Result: Durham Jets (68/3; Stoneman 25) beat Yorkshire Vikings (134; Leaning 48; Rushworth 3/14) by six runs (D/L method)

Chris Rushworth took career-best figures of 3/14 as Durham Jets beat Yorkshire Vikings by six runs in a rain-affected contest at Emirates Riverside.

The opening bowler removed Adam Lyth, Kane Williamson and Azeem Rafiq en route to his outstanding figures from four overs.

He contributed to the Vikings’ 134 all out as Jack Leaning top-scored with 48.

The Jets reply got off to a quick start with 22 inside the first two overs, before three wickets pegged them back towards the end of the powerplay.

But they managed to nudge themselves ahead on D/L as the rain set in, before a persistent thunder and lightning warning brought the game to a close shortly after 9pm.

Yorkshire failed to bat out their overs, with three balls unusued, and Durham were 68/3 after 9.5 overs.

Gordon Muchall drove the final ball of Azeem Rafiq’s over for a straight four to make sure Durham stayed ahead of the rate to pick up their third win from seven.

Despite 43 in 24 balls from opener Alex Lees and a sensible 48 from Leaning, Yorkshire kept losing wickets to rash strokes.

Lyth smashed the first ball through the covers for four but in his next 17 balls, Rushworth took 2/5.

Lyth went down the pitch swinging wildly and was bowled, and Rushworth’s third over was a wicket maiden. Williamson tried to break the shackles by attempting a scoop, only to lose his leg stump.

Lees hit his eighth four off Scott Borthwick but then drove the leg-spinner to long-on, where Michael Richardson held a brilliant catch.

Rushworth returned for his final over in the 17th and held on to a steepling return chance from Rafiq to finish with career-best figures.

Mark Stoneman got the reply off to a swift start with 25 off 17 balls, which included a big six pulled in front of mid-wicket off Bresnan.

He drove Rafiq to long-off and Ben Stokes followed straight afterwards, victim to a sensational catch by Kane Williamson on the England man’s return to the side.

But Pringle kept up with the rate, sweeping left-arm spinner Karl Carver for six on the way to 20 off 15 balls while Muchall, making his first senior appearance of the season, was on ten when the heavy rain arrived.
