Unbeaten 75* from Jonathan Bushnell backed up by wickets from de Leede, McAlindon & Gibson help Durham to a 3 wicket showcase win against Northumberland

An unbeaten 75* from Jonathan Bushnell guided Durham to a three wicket victory over Northumberland in the One Day Cup Showcase fixture at Jesmond.
Bas de Leede (3-27), Stanley McAlindon (2-49) and Oliver Gibson (2-16) all impressed with the ball as Durham dismissed their hosts for 192.
Jonathan Bushnell anchored the Durham response, scoring an unbeaten 75 from 141 balls as Paul Coughlin scored a quick-fire 48 on the way to victory.

Coughlin inserted the hosts in Jesmond, contributing to Northumberland’s cagey start with just five runs coming from his opening three overs and 17 from the opening five. A flurry of boundaries sparked life into the innings as both openers accelerated.

Alasdair Appleby took McAlindon for 18 off the ninth, including a maximum straight down the ground to bring up fifty for the first wicket. Hogg’s line continued to be punished with Yash Vagadia piercing the covers to take 68 from the powerplay.

McAlindon saw Appleby put down on 32 but took revenge in his following over as he put an end to the opening stand worth 84- the game’s highest partnership, striking Appleby on the back pad for 37.

Bas de Leede was avenged too, after seeing a tough chance shelled in the slips on 28, he soon found the inside edge of Vagadia to divert into leg stump for 37.

Nikhil Gorantla then fell cheaply as Gibson moved one through the gate to strike the top of off peg, Northumberland having lost three wickets for 13 runs.

Mitchell Killeen and McAlindon struck either side of the drinks break; Killeen had former teammate Ross Whitfield caught in the deep before McAlindon was restored for his second spell, Robbie Bowman dragging on a short ball in his returning over.

Borthwick’s introduction brought about some batting impetus, Harry Crawhsaw striking his opening over for 12 and Sebastian Allison hit double figures from his second.

De Leede returned from the opposite end, taking two wickets in an over as he drew edges from both Crawhsaw (38) and Allison to reduce the hosts to 160 for seven. Scott Borthwick then claimed his first, trapping Oliver McGee bang in front.

Northumberland lost their ninth in the 45th when Max Williamson miscued a Gibson delivery into the hands of Borthwick. Bushnell wrapped up the innings, having Matthew Scott loft to Ben McKinney at cover with Northumberland eight short of 200.

Scott kickstarted Northumberland’s defence of 193 with a double wicket maiden, drawing a feather from Scott Borthwick before pinning de Leede on the front pad.
Scott continued to pile on the pressure for the hosts as he took his third, as McKinney guided into the hands of Whitfield.
Bushnell led Durham’s recovery with Jones alongside him in a second wicket stand of 78 to bring up 100 for the visitors at the halfway stage.
The re-introduction of Alisson brought about a double-breakthrough after drinks, finding the edges of Jones for 26 and Mustard without scoring.
Bushnell reached a patient half-century soon after and was partnered by a powerful Coughlin for a valuable stand of 66 to stabilise the innings and take Durham within 27 of the target.
The skipper smacked four fours and two maximums on his way to 48 from 34 before picking out Appleby on the straight rope in the 40th.
Appleby took another catch on the fence, that of Killeen for 13 as he lofted the bowling of Callum Fletcher with just eight further runs required.
Bushnell wrapped up victory with a boundary off Crawshaw’s bowling with McAlindon helping to see the Ds home.
