McCarthy picks up Ireland accolade

Durham bowler Barry McCarthy has earned recognition on the international stage after a breakthrough year for Ireland.

The 24-year-old picked up the Emerging Player of the Year award at Cricket Ireland’s Awards evening on Friday.

He has been rewarded for his form since making his One-Day International debut in June this year, taking 18 wickets in eight matches.

McCarthy returned career-best figures of 4/59 against Afghanistan and also impressed against Pakistan in August, taking 4/62.

It caps a successful season for the pace bowler, who also featured in Jon Lewis’ first team plans heavily throughout 2016.

He took 20 wickets in the Specsavers County Championship, including a maiden five-wicket haul against Lancashire at Emirates Riverside.
