McCarthy receives Ireland call

Durham fast bowler Barry McCarthy has been called up by Ireland for the upcoming matches against Afghanistan and the UAE.

The 24-year-old is included in a squad of 14 for the ICC Intercontinental Cup matches against Afghanistan, who are second to Ireland in the group.

In addition to the red-ball fixture, the two sides will face off in three T20Is & five ODIs, with all matches played at Greater Noida in India.

They will prepare for the game by undertaking a training camp in the UAE, where they will play the hosts in two ODIs on March 2 & 4.

McCarthy was selected for the recent Desert T20 tournament but did not feature as Ireland reached the final, losing to Afghanistan.

Stuart Poynter, who twice passed his career T20I best score in that tournament, has not been selected.
