North East Warriors got their T20 County Cup campaign off to a belated winning start with a convincing eight wicket victory over Cricket Scotland before a washout against Nottinghamshire.
Harriet Robson won the toss for the Warriors and chose to field first at Boldon Cricket Club. Scotland got off to a solid start before Ellie Tiffin took two early wickets in the powerplay to reduce the visitors to 26 for two.
Scotland had started to build a partnership before top scorer Abbi Aitken-Drummond fell to Freya Rook for 28. This brought about a cluster of wickets where the Warriors took three further wickets for just 12 runs.
Samantha Haggo (14) and Anna Sturgess (13) shared a stand of 31 to take Scotland to 88 before both fell in quick succession. The Warriors cleaned up the tail efficiently with four wickets falling for eight run to have Scotland 96 all out.
Tiffin shone with the ball as she took figures of 3-9 from her four overs, being backed up by a pair of wickets apiece for Rook and Laura Trotter with Trudy Johnson also claiming one scalp.
In response, the North East Warriors were led by opening batter Layla Tipton who scored 55 not out from 36 balls with eight fours and two sixes to take the lion’s share of the runs.
She had an opening partnership worth 39 with Harriet Robson (11) before she shared 45 with Johnson who made 25 runs. Grace Thompson came in to score six not out to see the Warriors home with eight wickets in hand and 39 deliveries remaining.
In their second fixture of the day the Warriors fell victim to the weather for the third time in just four fixtures as Nottinghamshire’s visit was abandoned due to rain.
Robson inserted the visitors who went on to make 53 for six in an innings reduced to 10 overs; Grace Thompson, Tipton, Tiffin and Trotter all took a wicket each before the match was abandoned.
