Durham cricketers James Weighell and Matthew Potts attended Durham School today (13 February) to take part in a non-stop indoor cricket match aiming to last for a whopping 48 hours.
The event that aims to break the world record for the longest indoor cricket match took place at Durham School – the workplace of former Durham CCC batsman Gordon Muchall – began at 6pm on Monday, 12 February and is scheduled to finish at 6pm on Wednesday, 14 February.
Weighell and Potts both participated for two hours and took their turn fielding, batting and bowling as well as taking time to pose for photographs, sign memorabilia and support the players as they entered their 17th hour of playing.
Durham paceman Weighell said: “It’s great to come along today and help the lads out on their world record attempt and raise money for such a great charity.
“There was some good cricket being played and I’m very impressed with the guys’ determination to keep playing for such a long time.”
The event was in support of PAPYRUS, a youth suicide prevention charity whose work includes running a support line for young people at risk and a range of campaigns to start conversations between young people around mental health.
Over 100 volunteers and many other supporters from Durham University, local sport clubs and the wider community are taking part over the three days.
