Poynter and McCarthy sign contract extensions

Ireland internationals Stuart Poynter and Barry McCarthy have agreed terms on respective two-year contracts with the club.

Both have committed their futures to Durham until the end of the 2018 season after a breakthrough year at Emirates Riverside.

Wicketkeeper Poynter made his first-class debut midway through the summer and forced his way into the side, making four Specsavers County Championship appearances.

And his performances were recognised with the Second XI Player of the Year at last night’s Player of the Year awards dinner.

McCarthy made his seasonal debut against Lancashire, taking a maiden five-wicket haul en route to 20 first-class wickets in 2016.

The pair continue to represent Ireland on the international stage and recently returned from a two-game stint in South Africa, facing the hosts and Australia in One-Day internationals.
