Rain curtails final 2nd XI Championship match

Result: Durham 2nd XI (201; Steel 42; Bailey 4/46) drew with Lancashire 2nd XI (256; Chanderpaul 103*, Davies 51; Weighell 6/47)

Match scorecard

Durham’s final day of the Second XI Championship 2017 was rendered a washout against Lancashire at Todmorden CC.

Neil Killeen’s side were preparing to bat again with a 55-run deficit on the final day after Lancashire made 256 to close Day Two.

However, overnight rain left the ground sodden overnight & the elements continued on the morning, leaving the umpires with little decision but to abandon the day.

The result leaves Lancashire top of the North Division & in pole position to face off with the winner of the South Group for the 2nd XI Championship title, which was won by Durham last season.

Close, Day Two: Durham 2nd XI (201; Steel 42; Bailey 4/46) trail Lancashire 2nd XI (256; Chanderpaul 103*, Davies 51; Weighell 6/47) by 55 runs

Match scorecard

James Weighell sparked a Lancashire collapse with six wickets before ex-Durham man Shiv Chanderpaul smashed a quickfire century on Day Two of the Second XI Championship match.

Weighell’s haul of 6/47 from 17 overs looked to have handed the Seconds a first innings lead, leaving the hosts nine down & still 33 runs behind.

However, the 43-year-old launched a brutal assault to move past his century in an 88-run final wicket partnership with Toby Lester.

Chanderpaul’s knock contained 8x4s & 7x6s before Lester was trapped LBW by Ben Whitehead, handing Lancashire a lead of 55 ahead of the final day.

It was Graham Onions who kickstarted the day for Durham, having Alex Davies caught behind shortly after reaching his half-century from an overnight position of 48*.

From there it was Weighell’s turn as three wickets in as many overs decimated the middle order & included the wicket of Danny Lamb trapped LBW second ball.

Tom Bailey’s resistance was ended by Usman Arshad on 11 before Weighell returned to strike twice more to complete his six-fer.

But Chanderpaul moved through the gears, first moving past 50 & then marching on to a century by scoring a rapid 61 in the tenth wicket partnership to hand Lancashire a tidy lead.

Close, Day One: Durham 2nd XI (201; Steel 42; Bailey 4/46) lead Lancashire 2nd XI (76/2; Davies 48*) by 125 runs

Match scorecard

Durham recovered from a spree of early wickets to make 201 on Day One of the 2nd XI Championship match against Lancashire at Todmorden CC.

After dropping to 9/3 in the opening seven overs, Scott Steel added 42 before the middle order hauled Neil Killeen’s side over three figures.

Steel & Academy batsman Sol Bell (38) put on 54 for the third wicket before Bell & Brydon Carse also put on 54 for the fourth wicket.

Two more scalps for Tom Bailey, who finished with 4/46, sparked the loss of another three wickets before a final wicket stand of 27 pushed the Seconds over 200.

George Harding & Graham Onions made 20 each before the former was clean bowled by Liam Hurt, his third wicket.

A first wicket stand of 37 between First XI regulars Alex Davies & Haseeb Hameed threatened to leave Durham wicketless at the close.

But Usman Arshad trapped Hameed LBW for 19 & James Weighell returned to have Rob Jones caught behind for two.

The hosts will begin Day Two with Davies (48*) & ex-Durham batsman Shiv Chanderpaul (4*) at the crease.
