Rushworth takes 5 on Day 2

After rain washed away most of Day one, Durham got off to the perfect start on Day 2 with Graham Onions striking in his first over of the day.

Onions trapped Derbyshire Captain Wayne Madsen lbw on the fourth ball of the day as Durham claimed their second wicket, Derbyshire 100-2.

It was then Derbyshire who took honours for the morning session with the home side relishing their opportunities out in the middle as Borrington and Chanderpaul took a fancy to the Durham attack.

The pair combined to frustrate the Durham attack and compile a 106 run stand with both Derbyshire batsmen making half centuries and leading from the front for their side.

It was Usman Arshad who finally claimed the breakthrough in the 73rd over when Chanderpaul edged to Durham captain Paul Collingwood after making 53.

Borrington continued at the crease and combined with Johnson to keep the Derby tally ticking over until the new ball came into effect with Graham Onions taking full advantage.

Onions took Borrington’s wicket in the 82nd over as the opener edged to Scott Borthwick in the slips, departing for 75 as Derbyshire were 242-4.

From then on it was Durham’s afternoon with their quality attack showing their class to rip through the Derbyshire attack and take the remaining 6 wickets for just 56 runs.

Chris Rushworth took two quick wickets with the Derbyshire tally on 248 with Johnson (29) following in Borrington’s footsteps to find Borthwick and Poynter knicking to Mustard without troubling the scoreboard.

Onions then struck again removing Hughes with Arshad taking the catch as the momentum swung with the home side losing 4-6.

The tail wagged a little for Derbsyhire with Palladino contributing 22 before he became Onions next victim with the paceman bowling him in the 100th over to have Derbyshire 290-8.

Rushworth then cleaned up the final two wickets, dismissing Wainwright for 16 who found Collingwood and then taking the last wicket of Footitt with the last man in hitting back to Rushworth who claimed another 5 wicket haul as Derbyshire ended their first innings on 298.

It was a great recovery by Durham taking 7-92 to deny Derbyshire a third batting point whilst claiming maxiumum bowling points themselves.

The Durham reply started well with Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings getting them off to a good start adding 49 before Stoneman was caught behind for 30 with Palladino taking the first wicket for Derbyshire.

Jenning was then the next to fall four overs after Stoneman was dismissed and with four overs to play in the day as the opener was bowled by Palladino who claimed his second wicket.

Scott Borthwick 21no and Will Smith 3no then saw out the remaining overs as Durham finished on 82-2, chasing Derbyshire’s first innings of 298.
