Captain James Weighell finished with a five-for as Durham’s Seconds ended the season with a win at Sussex.

Weighell took 5/26, including three of the last four wickets to fall, as his side ran out winners by 104 runs.

Set 344 to win after Adam Hickey’s blitz in the early morning, regular wickets hampered the home side’s progress as they limped to 177/6.

Weighell had two, including opener Welch for 51, while first innings centurion Delroy Rawlins was trapped lbw, the first of two wickets for Josh Coughlin.

A partnership of 62 between Abidine Sakande and Joe Billings, the only one of the innings to eclipse 50, briefly put Sussex back into the contest.

But the former fell to Weighell and the rest followed rather quickly as four wickets fell for just one run.

Hickey had earlier boosted Durham in the search of quick runs, resuming from an overnight position to score 62 from 37 balls, while Weighell added two maximums.

Tom Hewison scored a debut ton while Michael Richardson fell one short as the Seconds racked up 403 on Day One of the season-closing friendly at Sussex.

The youngster registered his ton after a mammoth stand of 189 with Richardson, who raced to 99 from 131 deliveries.

But the wicketkeeper fell agonisingly short in edging behind off Daniel Douthwaite one shy of the milestone.

Hewison, a promising opening batsman for Stockton CC in the North East Premier League, went one better and reached three figures from number three.

He fell shortly after but had already completed a memorable first innings for Neil Killeen’s side, bringing up the ton with 16x4s and a maximum.

Late order runs from Eddie Hurst (41*) & Durham Academy wicketkeeper Scott Steel (52*) in a partnership of 92 ensured captain James Weighell could declare before the close.

Steel’s knock came from just 65 balls with three fours and three sixes.

Left with nine overs to bat at the tail end of the day, Sussex reached 37 without loss.
