Sedgefield Primary win Y5/Y6 Girls’ County Finals

Sedgefield Primary School won the Y5/Y6 Girls’ Countdown Cricket County Finals.

Playing Lord Blyton Primary School from South Tyneside in the final, Sedgefield Primary won by 26 runs at Washington Cricket Club.

The countdown festival is part of a wider county competition programme for schools, aiming to give more opportunity to primary school pupils to compete in the season.

More than a hundred teams took part in 12 district Y5/Y6 Girls’ Countdown Cricket Competitions, taking place across the summer term, with the winners of each qualifying for the County Finals Day at Washington.

The festivals programme ensures that every school in the county can be part of Durham Cricket’s initiatives throughout the season, while giving pupils an entry route for their cricket journey in their local cricket club.

Using the countdown cricket format, the Festivals programme ties in with the Hundred in the second part of the summer, while keeping schools and pupils involved.

Nine schools out of the 12 qualifiied took part in a the Y5/6 Girls’ County Finals Day. From three groups, the winners and the best runners-up qualified for the semi-finals.

In the semis, Lord Blyton beat Neville’s Cross Primary  by 1 run, while Sedgefield Primary won against Our Lady and St.Thomas from Wear Valley by 33 runs.

In the third place play-off, Neville’s Cross Primary claimed the win against Our Lady and St.Thomas by 7 runs.

Durham Cricket would like to thank every school who got involved in this year’s Y5/Y6 Girls’ Countdown Cricket Festivals.
