Senior Women to play Academy in Sunday friendlies

Durham Women are set to start their season under new Head Coach Danielle Hazell with friendlies against Durham Girls’ Academy on Sunday, 28 April at Mainsforth Cricket Club.

Durham’s sides have challenged each other to two T20 games in preparation for their official fixtures.

The friendlies kick-off the season for the Senior Women, while the Academy will be going into the clash after a two-game victory against Durham University last weekend.

The season ahead is an exciting one for both sides. The Academy will be playing their first season as a Regional Development Centre, after being awarded the ECB status in the winter, while the Women’s side are embarking on a summer in Division Two of ECB’s Women’s County Championship after earning promotion last year.

The Senior Women go into the season with a new head coach – retired England International Danielle Hazell, who has also been working with the Academy alongside Head Coach James Lowe.

Ahead of Sunday’s friendlies, Lowe said: “This game is an opportunity for the best girls in the region to play and compete against each other. It’s a development opportunity to play good quality cricket on grass in preparation for the competitive games coming up.

“It’s been great having Dani work with the girls; it’s been brilliant for both the senior and the junior sides to have someone of that calibre advising them and coaching them. I’m sure everybody will be looking to impress on Sunday and I’m certain that the work they’ve put in has been worthwhile.”

Durham Senior Women will play Durham Academy on Sunday, 28 April at Mainsforth Cricket Club with the first game scheduled for 11.00am and the second starting at 2.00pm.
