Six-wicket Hickey seals thrilling win

Result: Durham (219 & 352/9d; Jones 88, Hickey 81) beat Leicestershire (270 & 284; Fazakerley 83; Hickey 6/74) by 17 runs

Scorecard

Adam Hickey took six wickets on the final afternoon as the Seconds secured a dramatic 17-run win over Leicestershire at Emirates Riverside.

The all-rounder contributed with the ball after earlier doing so with the bat on Day Two, making 81 in a total of 352/9 declared.

And he returned with the ball to blow away the middle & lower order, handing his side a second Championship win of the season.

Michael Jones added 88 & Scott Steel made an unbeaten 38 as they overturned a 51-run deficit on the first innings to set a meaningful target.

That left the visitors chasing 302 for victory & they looked to be moving serenely at 141/2.

Two quick wickets within five overs, one each for Oliver Smithson & Hickey, left Leicestershire needing 142 with six wickets in the hutch.

Another big partnership of 87 put it firmly back in Leicestershire’s favour before Hickey’s off spin rolled through the lower order.

Three wickets for five runs left the final pair needing 23 but Hickey had the final say to finish with six wickets & secure a second Championship win.

Close, Day One: Leicestershire (169/6; Raine 66) trail Durham (219; Coughlin 87; Shreck 4/30) by 50 runs

Scorecard

Josh Coughlin hit a superb 87 before the bowlers fought back late on Day One against Leicestershire Seconds at Emirates Riverside.

Coughlin’s partnership of 122 with Jamie Dass, who struck 55, hauled Durham from a precarious position of 49/6.

They had slumped to 10/4 early in the morning to four catches behind the wicket, with Will Fazakerley taking three, before captain Adam Hickey steadied the ship.

He became one of four wickets for Charlie Shreck but Coughlin & Dass combined to hand Durham a useful total.

The 19-year-old scored 14 boundaries at number eight, including two maximums, displaying his all-round attributes.

Shreck dismissed him 13 shy of a century but his excellent work made sure Durham made a reasonable 219.

The reply got off to an excellent start as Barry McCarthy removed Aadil Ali, but a partnership of 101 between Lewis Hill & ex-Durham man Ben Raine seemed to put the visitors back in the driving seat.

However, two Hickey wickets within three balls dragged things back towards even & three more strikes before the close ensured it is honours even heading into Day Two.
