“Gordon and myself has a good partnership, we were playing with a certain amount of ease, runs were flowing. The Sussex attack, credit to them, came out after lunch and bowled with much more discipline and made it harder for us to score and as a result we probably played a few loose shots as a team”, said Smith.
““I think I could’ve got a bigger milestone, I’m disappointed not to have got more really. I’ve got the opportunity to score a few runs, it’s great to be in the team and scoring but I want to score a few more though.
“I don’t think we were at the same levels of application batting that were shown down at Southampton and Headingley, so we were disappointed with 290, I thought 360 would be about par on that wicket, having said that, we’ve got a great opportunity to bowl them out for less.
“The pitch was hard to get in on and once you were in you did have to graft. That’s something we’ll have in our favour when we come to bowl tomorrow.
“To get Ed Joyce early is a definite bonus, he can go on to get big scores so to get him early on was good for us. If we can get a few early wickets that’s be great, they’ve had a few second innings collapses in the last few games so that will be in their minds. We need to breakthrough, get to their middle order and we could be away.”
