Somerset victorious over Durham at Taunton

Somerset claimed a five wicket win over Durham at Taunton this week – read the day four round up here.

Somerset reached 400 early on in the first session of day and declared having just lost one further wicket, that of Peter Trego who was bowled by Jamie Harrison on 89.  

In hazy conditions the Durham openers returned for their second innings  with Michael Di Venuto and Will Smith putting on 36 before the former was caught by James Hildreth in the slips off the bowling of Jamie Overton.  

The loss of Mark Stoneman, who was caught by Hildreth off Craig Overton for 13, was the first of three wickets to be lost with the Durham total at 69.   

Ben Stokes was Craig Overton’s second victim after being caught by Alex Barrow having faced four deliveries.  Will Smith was dismissed an over later, caught by Trego off Alfonso Thomas for 22.

Ian Blackwell helped accelerate the score, adding 38 which included six boundaries and a maximum, before his fifty run partnership with Paul Collingwood was brought to an end when he was caught and bowled by George Dockrell.   

Durham were 131-7 after losing another two wickets within three deliveries as both Phil Mustard and Liam Plunkett both returned to the pavilion without scoring after being caught off the bowling of Dockrell.  

A fouth wicket fell without the total being added to with Callum Thorp caught by Jamie Overton as he became Dockrell’s fourth victim, bringing Jamie Harrison to the crease to join Collingwood.

Durham were 158-9 after Paul Collingwood was caught by Hildreth becoming the fifth of Dockrell’s victims.  

Harrison was the last man to be dismissed, caught by Buttler off Dockrell on 20, with
Durham posting a second innings total of 167, requiring 152 to win.  

Harrison’s impressive debut continued as he trapped Alex Barrow lbw first ball of the Somerset response to a huge cheer from the travelling Durham supporters.

Somerset were 17-2 in the fourth over after Nick Compton was caught by Collingwood off Blackwell for 8.

Stephen Harmison broke the 83 run third wicket partnership when Hildreth (31) was dismissed thanks to superb diving catch by Thorp.

It was Will Smith who eventually trapped Suppiah lbw after he had scored a damaging 73, at this point Somerset needed just 23 runs to win.  

Somerset were 138-5 after Blackwell had Buttler caught on 7.  

Kieswetter was the man to hit the winning shot, a huge six, which saw Somerset claim victory by five wickets.
