The opening batsman scored 109 from 67 balls as he carried his bat through 20 overs in a score of 204/5.
Steel’s innings consisted of 17 boundaries, including one maximum, as a partnership of 122 in 12 overs with Gareth Harte pushed Neil Killeen’s side up to a huge score.
Harte’s knock of 61 was a destructive one, coming off 35 balls with five sixes to put the visitors under the pump.
A flurry of run outs towards the end of the innings halted Durham’s progress but Stuart Poynter added 12 off six balls to help re-instate momentum in the final overs.
Warwickshire raced out of the blocks before NatWest T20 Blast captain Paul Coughlin took two in his opening two overs, with Ed Pollock caught by Liam Trevaskis after smashing 50 from 21 balls.
Regular wickets therein kept Durham well on top with Ryan Pringle (3), Barry McCarthy (2), George Harding (1) & Josh Coughlin (1) in the action before Coughlin senior returned to finish things off in a 36-run win.
The first match went down to the final ball as Killeen’s men lost out by five wickets with a ball to spare.
Despite only making 127 all out after Australian bowler Ryan Sidebottom took 5/11, some economical bowling from Durham’s attack ensured it went down to the wire.
Adam Hickey was the pick of the bowlers with 2/22 while Graham Onions made 1/14 from his allocation of four overs, but Matthew Lamb’s 54 led the visitors to victory.
