Stokes appointed England vice-captain

Ben Stokes has been appointed as vice-captain of the England Test side.

The 25-year-old will assist captain Joe Root, the ECB announced on Monday,

Stokes, who was vice-captain of the ODI side on the tour of Bangladesh late last year, will assume the role immediately.

The first series under the stewardship of Root & Stokes will be the visit of South Africa, which starts in July.

Root said: “It is a huge honour to be given the England Test captaincy. I feel privileged, humbled and very excited.

“The senior guys in the changing room play a very influential role and whilst there’s a natural progression for me it’s a huge support to know that they are there to help and advise.”
