Ben Stokes has supported Durham County Cricket Club under-16’s trip to Dubai and identified the tour as an important part of the youngsters’ development.
Durham have once again been invited to take part in the Ramada Gulf Cup – a tournament which celebrates young cricket talent – this winter and England superstar Stokes, who participated in the tournament himself, has heaped praise on the competition.
Fundraising for the trip has been tirelessly collected by the parents of the players and fantastic contributions from sponsorship, however this year the club also received a significant financial donation from Stokes, who wanted to express his backing of the tournament.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for some of Durham’s young guys to gain invaluable experience, learn about other cultures and play high-level cricket on some good pitches,” said the 27-year-old.
“I remember going on the trip as a teenager with Durham and really enjoying the experience, it taught me a lot about myself as a cricketer and as a person and I’m delighted to have been able to help out.”
Durham County Cricket Club, Academy Director, John Windows, said: “We’re delighted to be once again heading out to Dubai for the Gulf Cup and giving a range of u16’s a chance to compete in a different environment.
“This is a top-quality tournament and the boys get a chance to experience sub-continent conditions.
“It’s a lovely gesture from Ben to help out in such a big way financially and we will certainly ensure that the money is put to good use and furthers the development of our talented youngsters.”
