4 Durham players will feature in the 2022 edition of The Hundred after the ECB today confirmed the players which are to be retained across their women’s and men’s squads.
Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts have all been retained with the Northern Superchargers based in Leeds while Mark Wood has been named as the London Spirit’s ECB Central Contracted player.
The Hundred returns in August, mixing fast-paced, world-class cricket with family friendly music and entertainment off the pitch as they look to build on an impressive opening year.
The Northern Superchargers will get underway on Friday 5 August taking on Manchester Originals at Old Trafford with the London Spirit in action a day earlier travelling to the Oval to go up against Oval Invisibles.
Sanjay Patel, Managing Director for The Hundred said, “The Hundred helped grow the game last year. With more than 500,000 tickets sold and issued and 16 million watching on TV – with half of them being new to cricket – we saw a new audience enjoying the game for the first time. We can’t wait to build on that this year, bringing world class cricket and an incredible family day out to fans across England and Wales.”
The first year of The Hundred saw 510,000 tickets sold and issued as the competition welcomed new and existing fans. Grounds across the country posted sell-outs and 19% of all tickets sold were for under 16s. 55% of ticket buyers for The Hundred hadn’t bought a ticket for cricket in this country before while attendances across the competition were the highest for a women’s cricket event globally ever.
Teams will now turn their attention to planning which new players they want to snap up to strengthen their line-ups this year.
The men’s squads will fill their remaining slots at The Hundred Draft on 30 March, where they will take turns to pick from the hundreds of domestic and international cricketers expected to sign up in search of earning a place in the competition. London Spirit will have the first pick followed by Welsh Fire and Manchester Originals. Welsh Fire will be the busiest side during The Draft, with seven slots to fill, including three overseas spots.
New signings, both domestic and overseas, will be announced by the women’s side on the same day, including any England women’s stars who have signed for a new team in 2022.
For the first time, both men’s and women’s sides will be able to select an additional fourth overseas player for their squad in an overseas Wildcard Draft in June. Teams will still only be able to field three overseas players in their playing XI.
The women’s teams will be finalised through the open market signing process, which concludes at the end of June, giving domestic players plenty of motivation to catch the eye during the Charlotte Edwards Cup. The men’s squads will be finalised in early July with the domestic Wildcard Draft pick.
