Durham Dynamos lost by 60 runs to Surrey Lions at The Kia Oval in their second Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture
After losing the toss and being asked to field first, Mitchell Claydon struck in three successive overs, with Steve Davies caught behind on 14 in the fourth over as Surrey reached 25.
He struck again with the first delivery of his next over, bowling Rory Hamilton-Brown on 14 and then had Jason Roy caught behind on 15 with Surrey 47-3.
Tom Maynard, batting confidently, established a 47 run partnership with Zander De Bruyn (22) before Gareth Breese made the breakthrough, bowling the latter in the 21st over.
Scott Borthwick struck three deliveries later reducing the hosts to 106-5 as he bowled Matthew Spriegel before the left hander had the chance to get off the mark.
Maynard went on to contribute a massive 77 before he was caught by Borthwick, becoming Graham Onions only victim of the innings.
Surrey Lions post 221-7, losing the scalp of Gareth Batty who was run out on 5 off the last delivery of the innings.
In response Mark Stoneman started aggressively in the opening overs before losing his partner at the crease, Phil Mustard (1) when he was caught by Roy off Jade Dernbach in the third over.
Spriegel struck in his second over after Stokes (22) was stumped stepping down the wicket with the total at 46 in the ninth over. The Dynamos were 59-3 when Stoneman (29) was caught behind off Spriegel in 13th over.
A 61 run partnership between Gordon Muchall and Paul Collingwood boosted the Dynamos total but was brought to an end by Gareth Barry who bowled the captain on 32.
The visitors were 125-5, trailing by 97 runs with 11 overs of the innings to go, when Will Smith was bowled by Dernbach for 3.
Gordon Muchall reached 41 before he was caught tentatively by Maynard off Batty in the 32nd over.
Gareth Breese retired hurt after being stretchered off the field with what was later confirmed as a torn calf.
With the light fading the Durham batsmen required 84 runs to win with three wickets remaining. Roy managed to run out Borthwick for 3 and a late flurry from Stuart Meaker saw him clear up the tail, bowling Graham Onions and Mitchell Claydon.

“Obviously we’re disappointed to lose the game. I think during the game we did a lot of good things, we probably got the worst of the wicket, losing the toss and batting second. One of the lessons we’ve got to get out of the game is that we’ve got to get one of the batsmen to go on and get 70 or 80 to win those kind of games.
“Surrey are good in the field aswell and put us under pressure. They are a good unit and attack all the time. We thought we had a chance but we weren’t good enough. We never seemed to get the boundaries when we needed them.
“At times we were brilliant in the field and restricting them to the score we did, we would have taken that before the game.”
