Walking cricket returns outdoors from Friday

Durham Cricket Foundation is restating its walking cricket sessions outdoors from this Friday, 19th May.

Sessions will take place weekly at two venues – at Seat Unique Riverside and at Willington Cricket Club, as the initiative aims to give older people more opportunities to be involved in the game and be physically active.

Walking Cricket is a slow-paced variation of the conventional sport where the game is played at a walking speed.

With no running allowed, the thrill of scoring runs, strategic fielding, and tactical bowling is still very much there, as this version of the sport provides a welcoming environment for those seeking a less physically demanding, yet equally engaging athletic experience.

The sessions are part of Durham Cricket Foundation’s “50 Not Out” initiative, which aims to improve older people’s mental and physical wellbeing through two strands of the programme – “Active Minds”, offering arts and crafts activities and “Active Bodies”, focusing on a wide range of cricket-themed sessions.

With the cricket season underway now, the charity has moved all sessions outdoors and is welcoming new people to join and have a go.

The sessions are free of charge and all equipment is provided.

The following weekly sessions are available:

Willington: every Friday, 10:00am – 12:00pm at Willington Cricket Club,1 Manor Rd, Willington, Crook DL15 0QX

Chester le Street: every Friday, 1.00pm – 3.00pm, at Seat Unique Riverside, Chester le Street, DH33QR
