Day three: Durham 308 drew with Warwickshire 202AO & 207/3dec
Mitchell Killeen, Jonathan Bushnell and Kenzie Peakman take wickets on the final day as Durham Second XI draw with Warwickshire after rain hits Burnopfield.
As rain fell in Burnopfield, a further 20 overs were lost at the beginning of the final day with Durham starting 270 for seven.
The visitors struck in the day’s opening over, Stanley McAlindon falling after adding six to the overnight score. Luke Symington and Jack Brassell put on 30 together to take Durham past 300 before both were removed by Che Simmons in consecutive overs.
Durham finished 308 all out as Simmons picked up five wickets for the visitors. The visitors trailed by 106 runs with 66 overs remaining and faced two wicketless overs before lunch.
Mitchell Killeen struck in the third over after lunch, pinning Zen Malik for nine. Jonathan Bushnell took Durham’s second, having Amir Khan caught behind to leave Warwickshire 21 for two.
Kenzie Peakman dismissed former Durham loanee Chris Benjamin for 23 to disrupt a stand worth 48.
Kai Smith managed to ensure a draw for the visitors, sharing a 138-run stand with Isaac Mohammed. Smith brought up his century in just 116 balls with 15 fours in his innings and Mohammed reached fifty in 77 deliveries.
With Warwickshire ahead by 101, a stalemate was called four with an hour to go on day three as a draw was declared.
Day two: Durham Second XI 270/7 vs Warwickshire 202AO
Durham Second XI remain on top against Warwickshire after a stop-start day, heading into the final day with a 68 run lead in the 2XI Championship.
Only 8.5 overs were managed on day two as rain and bad light halted Durham’s progress. 12 minutes of play were managed before rain prevented any further play in the opening two sessions.
Haydon Mustard and Christian French resumed with Durham 247/4 when play restarted. Both were removed by Che Simmons in quick succession as the visitors looked to make the most of conditions.
Craig Miles then had Mitchell Killeen out caught, leaving Will Gidman’s side 264 for seven. Durham scored a further six runs, reaching 270 before bad light brought the day’s play to an end at quarter past four.
Day one: Durham Second XI 231/4 vs Warwickshire 202AO
Durham Second XI end day one on top against Warwickshire with wickets for George Drissell, Jonathan Bushnell and Mitchell Killeen followed by a Michael Jones century and fifty for Callum Gaffney.
After Stanley McAlindon won the toss and chose to bowl at Burnopfield, Durham began positively with an early wicket each for James Minto and Killeen.
Will Gidman’s side continued to pick up regular wickets as Drissell claimed the next two, dismissing Chris Benjamin and Kai Smith in consecutive overs. Drissell then took his third and Durham’s fifth in the 21st over with the visitors on 90.
Jack Brassell dismissed former Durham loanee Craig Miles with Warwickshire one run shy of one hundred before a 72-run stand was shared. Killeen had Michael Booth caught and bowled for his second to bring the partnership to an end.
Bushnell then got in on the act as he cleaned up the tail before dismissing Isaac Mohammed for 53 to finish with three wickets; Warwickshire were all out for 202 in under 46 overs, leaving more than half a day remaining.
Booth removed Bushnell in the third over before Jones and Gaffney shared an emphatic 144-run partnership for the third wicket in just 27 overs. Jones recorded his fifty from 68 balls before Gaffney made his half-century in just 57.
Gaffney went on to make 75, scoring 13 boundaries before he was bowled by Che Simmons. The visitors took another wicket twenty runs later but Durham responded with a stand of 68 for the fourth wicket.
Jones went on to complete his century in 135 balls with 12 fours and one six and was joined by Christian French who ended the day unbeaten on 20.
Jones was out caught on the first ball of the day’s final over, bringing day one to a slightly premature end with Durham in the lead by 39 with six wickets remaining.
